Reacher Season 4 Episodes 1-3 Recap

The Reacher has returned to Prime Video after fewer than three episodes and he’s already been shot at, drugged, put into a CIA cage and made to look up the military history of a senator in a library, which just happens to be the least Reacher-esque thing he could be doing. You, my friend, who have already streamed Episodes 1 to 3 and found yourself wondering what kind of man makes himself so many enemies before finishing his first cup of coffee, have come to the right place.

Reacher Season 4 Episode 1 Recap

There is no wasted time at all in season 4. Reacher, in the middle of the night, is wandering around Philadelphia, doing the best thing a Reacher can do – lollygagging around public transport and silently judging people. He sees a strange woman on the subway, and, thinking that the woman must be armed, starts talking her down. The woman pulls out a gun instead. She’s shooting herself because Reacher says he can help her.

A heart-wrenching beginning that instantly sets off the season’s emotional plotline: Reacher didn’t kill this lady, but he is the last person who saw her alive, which makes him obsessively looking for an answer to why she killed herself.

She is actually Anna Merrick, an employee of the government who dealt with classified documents from the Pentagon, which brings up the immediate question as to why government officials are suddenly so interested in her death. Two detectives come and question him, namely, the skeptical Sean Dougherty and Tamara Green, who is much sharper and useful. Before the local police can do anything, a group of unknown federal agents arrives and starts asking their own pointed questions. What Reacher finds out is that all parties involved are searching for a flash drive that Anna was supposed to have.

Reacher finds himself in some fights during the course of the episode, too (one of the downsides of the occupation, really), and ends up meeting Jacob – Anna’s brother and a police officer who doesn’t believe his sister committed suicide. The two go to the library to look for information about Senator John Sampson, whose name keeps cropping up. They get into the basement archives and things get violent rather quickly – Reacher ends up killing someone trying to attack him with a knife using a rather unusual technique involving two bookcases.

But that is left to the finale. As Reacher rushes to give Lila Hoth a warning that she is battling leukemia and is Sampson’s biological child, he spots an assassin attempting to break into her room. Chaos erupts but Reacher is able to save her from any harm. And the episode holds its harshest surprise till the very end where Reacher gets ambushed by tranquilizer darts and is taken away unconscious along with Tamara and Jacob on his way to meet up with Jacob. Apparently, even Reacher was not safe from a good aim and a chemistry set.

Reacher Season 4 Episode 2 Recap

Not long into Episode 2, we learn about what happened following the darting incident. Reacher finds himself in a cage that’s chained and has Tamara and Jacob in separate cages, and within five seconds, he realizes that they were captured by the CIA. True to character, Reacher gives the names of his interrogators nursery rhyme names, because apparently, even when kidnapped, he is still able to come up with some jokes.

With the help of a car jack that he had borrowed from outside the cages, Reacher bends the bars in such a way that they can be released, and in a series of escapades and running, they are rescued by Russell Plum, a freelance journalist who is spying on the building as he suspected that this is the CIA’s black site. He was correct.

The group then separates, with Reacher using a surprise attack during one of Senator Sampson’s public addresses in order to get the truth out of him. Inside, Sampson boldly states that he had never met Anna, nor have children with her while in Indonesia and offers up his DNA to prove it. Reacher is surprisingly convinced, realizing that a simple scandal cannot account for a CIA black site and professional assassins carrying knives.

Elsewhere, Tamara and Jacob search Anna’s apartment where they find out that Anna’s son, Ben, never turned up for his football practice and seems to be missing. As Reacher leaves the building, he spots Nolan Cahill, Sampson’s Chief of Staff and one of the four mysterious witnesses that Reacher saw on the subway train when Anna was killed.

Reacher Season 4 Episode 3 Recap

The episode begins in total bedlam, with armed individuals invading Russell’s decrepit loft, and for starters, they are not the same polished CIA members from before. Reacher fights them off using whatever is available to him, from wasp spray, in one of the best and most fun improvised fight scenes of the season. Russell had gone ahead to post online that he has found the lost flash drive, thus attracting not only the CIA but also this other violent faction to his location. And, to start with, they do not really like each other either, resulting in their shooting the CIA members before Reacher takes care of them.

With everyone back in the fold, the scope of the investigation expands. Reacher, Tamara, and Jacob follow Ben to his fraternity house at college, where his friend tells them that he left the fraternity house with a woman he had been dating. This leads them to her apartment, which proves to be the scene of another killing, as it is established that the killer doesn’t intend to leave any witnesses behind.

Additionally, Reacher starts digging into the past of Nolan Cahill, and finds links between him and Sampson’s service in Indonesia. The latter prove themselves indispensable once Reacher confronts Lila at a bowling alley and forces her to tell the truth about herself. Lila is not only a woman who looks for her father but a journalist looking into the claims that Sampson’s old military unit trained a ruthless foreign general named Putra, whose men had been perpetrating atrocities on civilian protesters. Cahill, in turn, had a connection to that period, and Anna was trying to get the flash drive from him before she got killed.

Reacher makes Sampson realize what he now knows. Sampson tells Reacher that although he knew Putra, he did not endorse or assist in the war crimes committed. The one who crumbles under pressure is Cahill. At the end of this episode, the shock moment comes when Cahill, after being questioned about his involvement in the whole affair, commits suicide by jumping off the rooftop, thereby immediately putting everything in another light. If this man chose death over giving the details of his knowledge, then whatever is there in the flash drive is definitely more dangerous than just politics.

In “One Small Step,” the show puts down its chess pieces on the board: Jacob, the brother trying to find his missing nephew. Tamara, the police officer who finds herself in way too deep now. Russell, the reporter who found himself with an army on his doorstep unexpectedly. And Sampson, the politician who may get dragged into his past in Indonesia no matter if he is guilty or not.

By the third episode, Season 4 is in full swing with its new format, which sees less of Reacher getting into fights in small-town conspiracies and more of him getting tangled up in a mess involving the Senate, the CIA, and any unfortunate soul that has happened to cross a USB drive.

Episode 4 Predictions

With the premiere block complete and Episode 4 set to air on August 19, this is where it seems the story might be going. This is speculative and not based on any confirmed spoilers.

Prediction 1: The death of Cahill marks the turning point of the season. If a man is willing to kill himself rather than speak, it implies that what Cahill knew about Putra, Anna, and the flash drive is greater than just a cover-up for one senator. Episode 4 is bound to focus on what Cahill protected from and what it was.

Prediction 2: What happens to Ben is dealt with. A kidnapped college student tied in with a dead witness never remains a subplot for very long. Episode 4 should reveal either the discovery of a very scared, yet living, Ben or of his demise – in either case getting closer to the mastermind of the plot.

Prediction 3: The group of knife-wielding terrorists is identified. After just two episodes, this group has already killed CIA agents and other people who are somehow involved in the investigation. Expect the television series to begin showing us exactly who the knife-wielding terrorists are working for and why they are after the flash drive so badly.

Prediction 4: The political career of Sampson becomes shakier, not more stable. Regardless of whether or not Sampson had anything to do with ordering atrocities, the murder of Cahill and his own connection with Putra would be enough to end any campaign. Expect Episode 4 to begin delving into the political ramifications.

Prediction 5: Reacher will only get one peaceful moment before another disaster strikes. This is the Reacher season. Expect there to be roughly ninety seconds of peace before the next attack occurs.

Final Thoughts

Just three episodes into Season 4, Reacher has graduated from dealing with small-town corruption to conspiracies with political ramifications, and the show is clearly hoping that larger venues lead to larger consequences. Fortunately, thus far, the bet appears to be paying off nicely: The mystery is more complex, the characters involved are more complex, and Reacher is getting more emotionally invested than a simple matter of bad timing.

As Season 4 moves on, expect repercussions for Cahill’s death, further woes for Sampson, and at least one scene where Reacher takes care of business the way he knows how – by beating it soundly. Stay tuned until then!
