Do you recall when Jumanji’s main joke was that you would become engrossed in the game? Yes, disregard it. Jumanji: Open World recently released a new trailer, and this time the game decided to come to us since it was sick of waiting for gamers.
Jumanji: Open World Brings the Game Into the Real World
That’s the entire pitch, and it’s a genuinely fun swing for a franchise finale. The earlier films kept everything neatly contained inside the game, level by level, with the crew racing against a ticking countdown of “lives.”There are no edges left this time. Players must climb back in to make things right as Jumanji’s creatures, landscapes, and unforeseen perils permeate throughout daily life. In other words, picture a house invasion with a jungle motif, but the residence is the entire world.
The Next Level from 2019 continues exactly where it left off in the teaser. The game’s avatars Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson), Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan), Finbar (Kevin Hart), and Oberon (Jack Black) appear in reality, trapped in “demo mode” as they wander through the real world while wildlife and various hazards overrun the city. And in true Jumanji fashion, there’s a gloriously chaotic twist: Spencer’s mom gets sucked into the game as Bravestone while he ends up stuck as Ruby Roundhouse. Somewhere, a teenage boy is having an identity crisis and a mother is finally understanding her son’s video game addiction on a spiritual level.
Oh, and the “demo mode” bug apparently comes with its own punishment: it makes Bravestone speak with a Spanish accent. Truly, the Jumanji cartridge has jokes.
Jumanji: Open World Officially Ends the Reboot Trilogy
This is billed as the finale of the modern trilogy the official line calls it “the hilarious final installment of the globally beloved action-adventure trilogy,” with the tagline warning us that our heroes have escaped the jungle before, but this time the game is breaking free of its console entirely. Fittingly, the marketing has leaned into “One Last Game” as the send-off tagline, closing out a modern run that began in 2017 and now wraps as the third and final chapter.
It’s a nice bit of symmetry too, since the very first movie’s most iconic prop makes an appearance: the original dice used by Robin Williams in the 1995 film are featured in the movie, first revealed at CinemaCon. A quiet little nod that ties this Christmas blockbuster all the way back to the game that started it in 1995.
Jumanji: Open World Cast Includes Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, and More
The core quartet Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan are back for the victory lap, and they’ve apparently sent out a “save the date” to basically the entire cast list. Returning faces include Alex Wolff, Madison Iseman, Ser’Darius Blaine, Morgan Turner, Bebe Neuwirth, Danny DeVito, Lamorne Morris, Marin Hinkle, Nick Jonas, Awkwafina, and Rhys Darby.
Brittany O’Grady (The White Lotus), Burn Gorman (Beetlejuice), Dan Hildebrand (Game of Thrones), and Jack Jewkes (Criminal Minds)—presumably new NPCs who did not sign up for whatever is about to happen to their character models—join the commotion for the first time.
Jake Kasdan, who co-wrote the script with Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg, is back behind the camera directing. Matt Tolmach, Kasdan, Johnson, Dany Garcia, and Hiram Garcia are producing.
Can Jumanji: Open World Beat Avengers: Doomsday and Dune 3?
Here’s where things get spicy. Jumanji: Open World is going up against two absolute juggernauts Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three both releasing just a week earlier in what is shaping up to be an absurdly stacked holiday season. To dodge some of that traffic, the film’s release actually got shifted from its original December 11 date to December 25, a scheduling chess move if there ever was one.
That being said, this business has typically profited from Christmas bets. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which debuted in December 2017 and made $963 million globally, including $405 million domestically, marked the beginning of the contemporary reboot. Offering a welcoming, family-friendly substitute for two darker sci-fi epics, counter-programming against superheroes and sandworms with a humorous, family-friendly ending may really be the best idea on the board.
When Does Jumanji: Open World Release in Theaters?
Put that date down in your calendar now: Jumanji: Open World will come out in American cinemas on December 25, 2026, while in other countries, they’ll see it two days before December 23.
So this Christmas, not only can we unwrap our gifts, but we can also see Dwayne Johnson’s gaming character suffer from a faulty Wi-Fi connection at Times Square. And somehow, that feels exactly what 2026 needs to give us.
