Even Lamb, though, draws a line when his employees turn up dead. And that’s just what keeps occurring in the latest Slow Horses Season 6 trailer, with startling effectiveness.
This week, Apple TV released the first glimpse of Season 6, and it doesn’t take long to remind you why this program is the best-kept secret in high-end espionage television.
There’s a body count, a returning character everyone assumed was worm food, a menacing father figure who makes Darth Vader look like a PTA dad, and Gary Oldman being magnificently rude to Kristin Scott Thomas in a garden. Basically, everything you signed up for.
Let’s pull this trailer apart scene by scene, because there’s more going on here than in most shows’ entire season finales.
Slow Horses Season 6 Introduces a Deadly New Threat
The trailer opens exactly where you’d hope: Jackson Lamb, unwashed and unbothered, standing in Diana Taverner’s garden and getting straight to the point. He wants to know why his Slow Horses the MI5 rejects nobody else wants keep showing up dead. Taverner, played with icy precision by Kristin Scott Thomas, doesn’t exactly rush to comfort him.
The entire season revolves around that question. The official narrative states that in Season 6, Taverner leads the Slough House team into a vicious game of revenge and retaliation, leaving them on the run. Lamb’s group of misfits must identify the person who has determined that the least capable branch of British intelligence should be methodically eliminated before they are added to the list.
If it sounds depressing, don’t worry it’s still Slow Horses, so the dread is covered in some of the silliest comedy on TV.
. Lamb barking “I cannot emphasize this enough: stay dark, yeah? No phones” only for Roddy Ho to immediately call him on a cellphone seconds later is peak Slough House logic. These people are professional spies who cannot follow a single basic instruction.
The Assassins Have Entered the Chat
This season’s central threat comes courtesy of two new, thoroughly unnerving additions: a pair of hired killers played by Kyle Soller (fresh off Andor) and MyAnna Buring (The Witcher). Casting actors from two of the biggest genre shows on television as your assassins is a statement of intent these aren’t background mercenaries, they’re the kind of performers who make you nervous the second they appear on screen.
Their presence forces one of the show’s most reluctant alumni back into action. Louisa Guy, played by Rosalind Eleazar, gets pulled out of retirement as the deaths pile up because apparently nobody who’s ever worked at Slough House gets to actually leave.
Slow Horses Season 6 Brings Back River Cartwright’s Father
You should reconsider if you believed that River Cartwright’s family drama was over. After going missing at the conclusion of Season 4, Hugo Weaving reappears as River’s merciless mercenary father, Frank Harkness. The reappearance of Harkness virtually ensures more battles, betrayals, and really awkward family dinners for Jack Lowden’s River.Harkness is the kind of villain that makes every other antagonist on this show seem like a little annoyance.
Consider shootouts, explosions, and hand-to-hand combat rather than just awkward hallway conversations, since the teaser suggested a much more physical season.Slow Horses has always been a combination of dark comedy and spy-thriller tension, but Season 6 appears to be taking a more action-packed approach while maintaining its sense of humor.
Sid Baker Is Alive
I buried the lede on purpose,because this is the moment everyone is talking about. Near the end of the trailer, River Cartwright runs across Sid Baker, the MI5 agent thought to have been killed in Season 1.Sid is played by Olivia Cooke,who also plays Alicent Hightower in House of the Dragon. She is depicted waiting at the top of a staircase, as if she had never left. This kind of revelation unexpectedly reframes years of backstory. Sid’s death was a foundational tragedy for the show the thing that helped push River into Slough House purgatory in the first place. Finding out she’s alive doesn’t just tease a reunion; it raises serious questions about what River, and the audience, actually thought they knew about how she “died.” Expect this storyline to dominate think-pieces the moment the premiere drops.
The trailer closes on Lamb, characteristically unbothered by the chaos, telling his long-suffering assistant Catherine Standish, “Oh come on, we’re spies” which might be the most Jackson Lamb sentence ever spoken.
The same chaos under a new showrunner
Additionally, there is a change occurring behind the scenes that should be noted. Longtime showrunner Will Smith, who led the program through its first five seasons before stepping away due to scheduling difficulties, is absent for the first time in season six. This season, Gaby Chiappe takes over as chief writer; Ben Vanstone is already scheduled to take over for Season 7. Adam Randall is back in directing.
A change in leadership is the kind of thing that could worry devoted viewers, considering how consistently fantastic this show has been. However, based on this trailer, it appears that Season 6 is keeping firmly in its lane in terms of tone, humor, and the distinctive Lamb-isms.
