When Spider-Man forgets that he should be amiable and neighborhood-oriented and instead just… vanishes, a very particular form of pandemonium occurs. That’s the idea behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the fourth solo film starring Tom Holland that opened in theaters this week. It may be the most emotionally charged web-slinger film since a certain multiverse cameo-fest went viral in 2021.
No pressure, right? Just follow up one of the biggest box office events in MCU history with… a quieter, sadder, more grown-up Peter Parker. Turns out, that gamble is paying off.

For those who fainted at the end of No Way Home, here is a brief synopsis: Peter ordered Doctor Strange to erase any proof that he was Aunt May, MJ, Spider-Man, and Ned.That choice has grown into something more significant four years later. Peter is fighting crime full-time, entirely alone, watching his old friends build lives that no longer include him. It’s the setup for what the marketing has (accurately, for once) called a genuinely “brand new day” for the character.
Sounds bleak.It’s not exactly, critics often refer to it as “grounded” and “mature” instead of “depressing,” which in blockbuster jargon just means “there are still jokes, don’t worry.”
Who Joins Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Brand New Day?
This is where things get spicy. The cast now includes:
- Sadie Sink as Jean Grey yes, an X-Men character, in a Spider-Man movie, because apparently mutant paperwork moves fast these days
- Jon Bernthal returning as Frank Castle/The Punisher, presumably to make everyone else’s trauma look mild by comparison
- Mark Ruffalo returning as Bruce Banner/Hulk, demonstrates that the Avengers group chat is still operational.
- The villain roster, which sounds more like a full convention floor than a spinoff pitch, is completed by Tramell Tillman and Michael Mando (Scorpion).
Fun trivia is also making the rounds: Rosario Dawson said at GalaxyCon Raleigh that she recorded a sequence in which she plays Claire Temple again, but it was edited. A Blu-ray extra with cut scenes is already making its own trailer somewhere.

Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, has taken over from Jon Watts, the director of the past three Holland-era Spider-Man movies.As per the critics, the movie is much more focused on the characters and is not all about the multiverse action. One critic for Fandango referred to the movie as being deeper and more introspective than the trilogy before it. Consider it Spider-Man’s “glow-up” phase.

Right next to No Way Home’s 93% and Into the Spider-Verse’s 97%, Brand New Day now has a Rotten Tomatoes rating in the high-80s to low-90s. For a franchise four movies deep with the same lead actor, that’s not nothing. Superhero fatigue may be a real phenomenon plaguing the genre at large, but nobody seems to have told this particular wall-crawler.
Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige explains why Spidey often sidesteps the subject of exhaustion by citing a phenomena he calls “consequence fatigue” the tiredness that spectators feel in a cinematic world where all deaths are reversible and all universes are interchangeable. According to him, Spider-Man succeeds because the stakes are still human-sized even when the adversaries are not.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Box Office Projections Break Expectations
Industry trackers are projecting a global opening in the neighborhood of $425 million, which would put Brand New Day in serious contention for one of the biggest debuts in movie history. Translation: This weekend’s theater popcorn queues will resemble the sales during Black Friday.
Is Spider-Man: Brand New Day Worth Watching?
This is the answer to all those people who wondered in previous years whether Marvel could deliver a Spider-Man movie not only epic but also intimate.This movie has heart, it has a cast list that seems like something from a superpower dream draft, and, surprisingly, a plot twist that even the universes’ gates can’t undo Peter Parker has to take responsibility for his actions.
Get a ticket, take a Kleenex for the quieter parts, and some popcorn for the punches. This is indeed a brand new day!
