Resident Evil (2026)
Grab your green herbs and lock your safe room doors, because Raccoon City is officially back on the menu. Zach Cregger, who followed his breakout hit Barbarian with the acclaimed 2025 horror film Weapons, has unleashed a new trailer for his Resident Evil reboot, and the internet has, predictably, lost its collective mind trying to decode every flickering shadow and blood-scrawled wall.
The film hits theaters on September 18, 2026, courtesy of Columbia Pictures, Constantin Film, and PlayStation Productions. And based on the trailer, this isn’t your dad’s Milla Jovovich fever dream. It’s something stranger, quieter, and, if Cregger’s track record holds, considerably more likely to make you sleep with the lights on.
Here’s the full breakdown: the story, the Easter eggs, the monsters, and the burning question every long-time fan is asking, where on earth is Leon Kennedy?
Wait, What’s This Movie Even About?
Forget everything you know about Umbrella board meetings and convoluted virus lore for a second. Cregger’s Resident Evil follows Bryan (played by Austin Abrams, last seen surviving Cregger’s own Weapons), a medical courier making, per Deadline’s reporting, a delivery to Raccoon City General Hospital. Naturally, “routine” doesn’t last long, the trailer shows his vehicle colliding with someone on a snowy road who is very much not okay and Bryan spends the rest of the night sprinting through an abandoned city trying not to become a light snack for whatever’s chasing him.
Cregger has described the whole thing as feeling like one continuous, breathless chase the horror equivalent of forgetting you left the stove on and having to run home, except the stove is several genetically modified monsters and the house is on fire in a metaphorical sense too.
Rounding out the cast are Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser, credited as Umbrella scientists Dave, Pauline, and Carl, respectively which, delightfully, sound less like sinister bioweapons researchers and more like the office softball team. In the trailer, Hauser’s character warns Bryan that his innocent little package is a lot more dangerous than a signature and a fist bump from the delivery guy usually implies.
The Setting: It’s Raccoon City, But Make It Cregger
Here’s where things get spicy for the lore nerds. Cregger has said the story unfolds alongside the Raccoon City outbreak familiar from Resident Evil 2 – 1998, zombies everywhere, chaos reigning. Except his version swaps the game’s late-September timeline for a snowier, colder aesthetic, a detail fans have already noticed and are debating in comment sections everywhere.
Cregger’s response, essentially: he’s not interested in a shot-for-shot recreation. He wants his own spin on the sandbox, not a two-hour cutscene. Given that a “faithful adaptation” of a 1998 survival-horror game has already been attempted (RIP, Welcome to Raccoon City, we hardly knew ye), a director with actual vision taking creative liberties might be exactly the shot in the arm this franchise needs.
The Easter Eggs: A Scavenger Hunt for the Faithful
Say what you will about the snow, but Cregger clearly did his homework. Fans and outlets alike have spotted a small arsenal of nods buried in the footage, including:
- A very specific green herb. In a scene where Bryan’s on the phone, eagle-eyed viewers can spot a plant sitting in the background and according to Cregger, in an IGN trailer breakdown, it’s not set dressing. He says he recreated the iconic Resident Evil 4 healing herb bucket “exactly,” copper detailing included, admitting it’s his favorite game in the series and that he’s scattered other RE4 items throughout the film for people to hunt down.
- Familiar ammo. Per a TechRadar report on the trailer, the shotgun shells Bryan eventually scrounges up match the design used in Resident Evil 4, a nice bit of continuity for anyone who’s spent way too many hours managing inventory space in that game.
- A lonely typewriter. Blink and you’ll miss it, but there’s a shot of a typewriter sitting in a dim room, widely noted by fans as a wink at the save-point ritual that defined a generation of controllers thrown across living rooms after a poorly timed death.
The Monsters: Resident Evil 6 Gets Its Redemption Arc
In maybe the trailer’s most surprising reveal, Cregger has said in interviews that he leaned on Resident Evil 6 for creature inspiration, yes, the one game the fandom loves to collectively pretend doesn’t exist. His stated reasoning: sheer volume. RE6 threw an absurd buffet of monster types at players, and Cregger wanted that same chaotic variety rather than recycling the same zombie design for ninety minutes straight.
There’s also a large, unnervingly bloated figure glimpsed briefly in the footage that some fans are speculating could be a Tyrant-inspired creature. That’s purely fan theorizing for now, Sony and Cregger haven’t confirmed its identity, but let’s be honest, in this franchise, if it’s oversized, hostile, and vaguely humanoid, it’s probably not there to help Bryan find his way home.
So… No Leon? No Jill? No Chris?
Here’s the part that’s splitting the fandom down the middle: Cregger has said in interviews that series icons like Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield are sitting this one out entirely. His reasoning is that shoehorning in fan-favorite characters would make the story feel “inorganic” to what’s otherwise a self-contained, ground-level survival tale.
It’s a bold swing. Some fans are already comparing Bryan to a nameless NPC destined to leave behind a tragic diary entry for the actual protagonists to find later. Others are cautiously optimistic that a story free of franchise baggage might let Cregger’s horror instincts, the same ones that made Barbarian and Weapons so unpredictable, actually breathe.
Should You Be Excited?
If you came into this expecting Milla Jovovich cartwheeling through laser hallways in slow motion, this is not that movie, and frankly, it was never going to be. What Cregger seems to be building instead is something closer to grounded, claustrophobic survival horror, one unlucky guy, one very bad night, and a city full of things that used to be people.
Given his batting average so far, that might be exactly the reset this franchise has needed since Paul W.S. Anderson hung up his slow-motion boots. We’ll find out for certain when Resident Evil stumbles, bleeding, into theaters on September 18, 2026.
Until then, maybe don’t accept any medical deliveries from strangers.
