Taylor Sheridan is expected to take a much bigger creative role in Dutton Ranch Season 2. The Yellowstone spinoff had a successful first season. Now it is entering its chapter with some changes behind the scenes. Taylor Sheridan’s increased involvement could help decide what happens next for Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler.
Kelly Reilly stated that Taylor Sheridan intends to be more involved in Season 2 than he was in the first season. During the season Taylor Sheridan was an executive producer but he did not handle the day to day creative work. That was mostly done by showrunner Chad Feehan and the writing team. Kelly Reilly explained that Taylor Sheridan wants to be more involved because he wants the series to keep getting better.
Taylor Sheridan Stayed Behind The Scenes During Season 1
Taylor Sheridan was not very visible during Season 1. Even though he did not write or oversee every part of the season, Dutton Ranch still felt like it was connected to Yellowstone. Beth and Rip are two of the recognizable characters in the franchise. When the show’s creators had to make decisions they would think about the time they spent working with Taylor Sheridan on Yellowstone. His understanding of the characters helped establish the foundation for Dutton Ranch.
This approach worked well. Dutton Ranch became one of Paramount+’s original launches. It showed that people were still very interested in the Yellowstone universe even though the series ended in 2024.
Season 2 Is Already Going Through Major Changes
Season 2 is already going through some changes. Taylor Sheridan’s increased involvement is not the major development. The original showrunner, Chad Feehan left the series before the first season premiered. Now Benjamin Cavell is in charge of the chapter. When there is a change in leadership like this it can bring a perspective. With Taylor Sheridan becoming more involved the series can stay connected to the vision that made Yellowstone so successful.
This continuity is important especially after the dramatic Season 1 finale. There were unresolved storylines, like Carter’s kidnapping and Mariano’s growing threat. The future of Beth and Rip is also uncertain. These things make the stakes higher for season 2.

Taylor Sheridan’s increased involvement also comes after months of headlines about his reported legal dispute with Cole Hauser. The disagreement over their coffee brand trademarks fueled plenty of speculation, with some fans wondering if it could affect the show. So far, though, there’s been no evidence that it has. With Sheridan now playing a bigger creative role in Season 2, many viewers will be watching to see how Rip Wheeler’s story moves forward and whether the series stays true to the world fans have come to love.
Sheridan has built a successful shared universe with Yellowstone and its spinoffs. His way of storytelling, character development and focus on family conflict are all parts of the franchise. If Taylor Sheridan is more involved it does not guarantee a season but it increases the chances that Dutton Ranch will feel more connected to the world that audiences love.
With Season 1 proving that the spinoff can succeed on its own, Season 2 has the chance to build on that momentum. If Taylor Sheridan takes a role fans have good reason to expect that the next chapter will expand the Yellowstone universe while staying true to the characters that made it popular.
