Six episodes ago, Jack Reacher witnessed a distressed woman take her own life on a Philadelphia subway. Since then, he’s broken a chemist’s fingers on a highway shoulder, watched a sitting senator dive into the Delaware River to stop a bombing, and somehow still hasn’t found time to buy a second shirt. If you’re catching up before the Reacher Season 4 finale, here’s your refresher on Episodes 1 through 6, a full recap of Episode 7, “Vote for Sampson,” and a few predictions for how this whole mess wraps up.
Quick Refresher: Reacher Season 4 Episodes 1-6
Episodes 1 through 3 set the whole season in motion. Reacher witnesses Anna Merrick take her own life on a Philadelphia subway, and the investigation into why quickly pulls in the CIA, a senator’s office, and a missing flash drive Anna may have been carrying. Reacher teams up with Anna’s brother Jacob, a Philadelphia detective named Tamara Green, and a jumpy freelance journalist named Russell Plum. The trail leads to Senator John Sampson, and to Lila Hoth, who initially claims Sampson is her biological father before her story starts unraveling. Episode 3 ends with Sampson’s chief of staff, Nolan Cahill, taking his own life off a rooftop rather than explain what he knows, a decision that makes much more sense once Episode 7 reveals Cahill was hiding a chemical weapons operation Sampson knew nothing about.
Episode 4, “Karambits and Pieces,” raises the stakes considerably. Sampson opens up to Reacher about his classified history with General Putra, while the investigation starts connecting Anna’s destroyed files to a much larger government operation. Jacob learns his nephew Ben was murdered with a karambit, the same curved blade later connected to another victim, Mary Ellen Daniels, with Lila and Amisha eventually revealed as the ones behind both killings. The episode ends on its biggest gut-punch: Reacher arrives at Lila’s hotel to find several attackers dead with their throats cut, and Amisha standing over the scene holding a blade of her own.

Episode 5, “Bridge,” turns Reacher into Philadelphia’s most wanted man after police find him surrounded by bodies. He escapes custody in a brutally memorable fashion (an ear is involved, and not in a good way for its owner), and Reacher learns the flash drive was never sent to Lila at all. Anna mailed it to Jacob, the person she trusted most, and it eventually reaches the team through him. The drive contains just one photograph: Sampson, Cahill, and General Putra standing with an unidentified fourth man. The episode ends with Lila and Amisha surviving a leap off a bridge and taking Jacob hostage.
Episode 6, “Plum Out of Luck,” opens with Reacher handing over the drive to save Jacob, only for Russell Plum to stumble into the standoff and get shot. In the chaos, Plum weakly identifies the mystery man in the photo as chemist Leo Ahlquist before Jacob rushes him to the hospital against Reacher’s advice. Reacher and Tamara track Ahlquist to Plutus Chemical, while Jacob is betrayed by his uncle Monty and handed over to corrupt cops. The episode ends about as badly as it possibly could: Reacher and Tamara are captured, handcuffed in the back of a van, and driven toward what looks like their execution.
That’s the cliffhanger Episode 7 has to answer, and it wastes no time doing it.
Reacher Season 4 Episode 7 Recap
Episode 7 opens exactly where Episode 6 left off, with the van doors sliding open and armed men ready to finish the job. Before they can, Springfield, a man working for Sampson, intervenes and kills them first. His investigation into the mystery photo had already led him to the situation, giving him the opening he needed to step in, a rescue that makes sense in hindsight rather than feeling like a lucky coincidence.
With Springfield now backing them up, Reacher wastes zero time getting back to work. He and Tamara track down Leo Ahlquist, run him off the road in classic Reacher fashion, and Reacher breaks the man’s fingers until he’s finally willing to talk. What comes out of that conversation reframes the entire season. The photograph everyone has been killing over is connected to Operation Mongoose, a CIA and DARPA program tied to General Putra’s forces in Indonesia. AI-assisted image enhancement reveals writing on a whiteboard in the background that couldn’t be read before, exposing a chemical weapon derived from a plant native to Indonesia, one that Lila happens to have the actual seeds to reproduce. The episode also clears up where everyone stands: Sampson genuinely didn’t know about the weapons research, since he would have exposed it immediately had he known, while Cahill did know and had his own reasons to keep it buried, reasons Ahlquist shared, since his pesticide business was reportedly built on the same underlying formula.
There’s an even bigger gut-punch buried in this reveal: Lila and Amisha haven’t just been chasing information. They’ve already built a working version of the weapon, tested it on a kidnapped victim, and are planning to auction it on the dark web, with the fundraiser providing the perfect stage for a live demonstration.
Meanwhile, Jacob gets an unexpected break. Detective Shaun Docherty has a change of heart and releases him rather than handing him over, having pieced together enough from the CIA and FBI’s tight-lipped snooping to know something much bigger than local corruption is going on. Freed, Jacob becomes a key source of information about what Lila and Amisha are actually planning.
The episode’s back half shifts into pure crisis mode. With the demonstration set for Sampson’s charity fundraiser, Reacher walks Sampson through the classic signs of a suicide bomber over the phone as the team races to get there. Sampson, drawing on his own military training, spots a match: Tomas Waberi, a man he and Lila had thanked for his service just an episode earlier. With Reacher still a few minutes out, Sampson decides not to wait, quietly closing in on Waberi himself.
It doesn’t stay quiet for long. Reacher’s arrival at the venue sets off a chain reaction, alerting the guards loudly enough that Waberi panics and reaches for his trigger. Sampson doesn’t hesitate. He tackles Waberi, and the two of them go over the edge together, plunging into the Delaware River just as the device detonates underwater, presumably limiting the weapon’s intended effect. The blast appears to end Sampson’s political campaign outright, and the episode closes without confirming whether he actually survived the fall, a cliffhanger sharp enough to make “Vote for Sampson” feel like the true turning point of the season, even with one episode still to go.
Reacher Season 4 Finale Predictions
The Reacher Season 4 finale, “Cut,” arrives September 16, and based on where Episode 7 leaves things, here’s where the story looks like it’s headed. These are predictions, not confirmed spoilers.
Prediction 1: Sampson survives, but his career doesn’t. Shows rarely build an entire season around redeeming a character just to kill him off one episode before the finish line, which is our read on this, not a confirmed detail. Expect Sampson to make it out of the river alive, even as the fundraiser disaster effectively finishes his political ambitions.
Prediction 2: The finale deals with the leftover weapon. With a working version of the chemical weapon already built and the planned auction interrupted, expect the finale to focus on tracking down whatever’s left of it, along with the fallout from a failed public demonstration.
Prediction 3: Lila and Amisha get one final confrontation with Reacher. Two women who’ve survived a bridge jump, a hotel massacre, and multiple double-crosses aren’t going to vanish quietly, especially with money and Amisha’s personal loyalty to Putra still driving them. Expect a last, direct clash with Reacher before the credits roll.
Prediction 4: The people behind Operation Mongoose finally get named. Episode 7 already exposed most of what Cahill was hiding, so expect the finale to push further up the chain, toward whoever authorized or protected the program in the first place.
Prediction 5: Reacher walks away, but not unscathed. True to form, expect Reacher to solve the season’s last problem the old-fashioned way, but this finale has been building toward genuine emotional cost for Jacob, Tamara, and now Sampson. Don’t expect everyone to walk out of this one in one piece.
Final Thoughts on Reacher Season 4
“Vote for Sampson” does the heavy lifting that penultimate episodes are built for, answering the season’s central mystery while setting the board for an explosive finish. What started as a chance encounter on a Philadelphia subway has become a story about a chemical weapon, a redemption arc nobody saw coming, and an auction that never quite happened. With the finale landing September 16, right alongside the premiere of the Neagley spin-off, Reacher Season 4 is barreling toward an ending that’s earned every ounce of chaos it’s about to deliver.
